ABOUT LIFE COACHING

We do not see things as they are, we see them as we are.  Perception is not reality.
Life coaching is about learning to perceive things differently and discover new options.

How does life coaching work?
What happens when you hire a life coach?

How does life coaching work?

"Whatever you can do, or think you can do, begin it.
For boldness has genius, power and magic within it."

Goethe

You set your goals and your life coach helps you to find creative ways of achieving them.  Your coach's skillful, upbeat way of working with you will motivate and inspire you, bringing new direction and clarity to your life.

Life coaching works best when you have something in your life that you are really motivated to tackle, change or achieve, so it is important to have a reasonably clear idea of what your objectives are before you begin.  You will need to have a strong feeling that you want your life to be different in some way, be fully committed to doing whatever it takes to make change happen, and be prepared to make the required investment of time and money in your future.

Life coaching is equally effective whether we talk face to face or on the telephone.  We do not have to live in the same city or even the same country.  Once you have decided that life coaching is right for you, please contact me  to discuss what you would like to achieve and we can then arrange an initial appointment.

Success is simply a state of mind.
If you want success, start thinking of yourself as a success.

What happens when you hire a life coach?

  • You take yourself and your future more seriously.

  • You take more effective and focused actions immediately.

  • You stop putting up with what is dragging you down.

  • You create momentum so that it is easier to get results.

  • You set goals that accurately reflect what you really want out of life.

  • You develop your self-awareness through open and honest discussion.

BENEFITS OF LIFE COACHING

Why hire a life coach?
What are your particular needs just now?
Why do people find life coaching so effective in facilitating change?
Your state of mind matters
Self-talk and stress
Stress management

Your thoughts are the true creative force in your life.  Keep them positive
and focused on what you really want rather than on what you don't want.

Why hire a life coach?

What do you most want to achieve?  What is stopping you?

You have a choice about how to live your life.  If it is not exactly what you want, you can either continue with the way things are and hope it somehow magically gets better, or you can choose to do something about it.  Working with a life coach will help you to change old destructive habits, unlearn behaviours that no longer serve you, and transform unhelpful, limiting beliefs into ones that support you and your growth.  A life coach will help you to recognise that you are infinitely resourceful, will show you how to become aware of your inner strength, learn how to draw on it effectively, and see the possibilities it offers you.

Life coaching is effective for helping you to:

  • find your way in life
  • take on new challenges
  • improve your prospects and finances
  • change career path
  • cope with major change
  • deal with stress, anxiety or health challenges
  • eliminate unwanted thought/behaviour patterns and phobias
  • tackle depression and relationship problems
  • overcome lack of confidence, indecision and stuck states
  • change limiting beliefs

What are your particular needs just now?

Do any of these ring true for you?

  • You want a more balanced and fulfilling life where you feel in control.

  • You want support in growing and developing your potential.

  • You feel dissatisfied but need help in identifying the problem and how to resolve it.

  • You want to achieve more with less effort and stress.

  • You want more out of life/work but are not sure quite how to get it.

  • You want support in overcoming specific challenges in your personal or professional life.

  • You are facing major change and would like help in working through it successfully.

  • You would like support in learning to handle stress and control your moods and behaviour.

  • You would like to change unwanted habits or beliefs and increase your self esteem.

  • You feel stuck and are looking for encouragement in kick-starting your motivation.

  • You want to communicate better and improve your relationships either at work or at home.

"You will become as great as your dominant aspiration...
if you cherish a vision in your heart, you will realize it."
---- James Allen, As You Think ----

Why do people find life coaching so effective in facilitating change?

  • Life coaching focuses your attention on what is actually going on for you and what needs to change.

  • Life coaching helps you to see things clearly and find workable solutions for challenges.

  • Life coaching enables you to identify your priorities and set realistic and achievable goals.

  • Life coaching keeps you focused and holds you accountable for your decisions and choices.

  • The life coach works with you regularly to keep you motivated, inspired and energised.

  • The life coach gives you the support and encouragement you need to keep you moving forwards.

  • The life coach's objectivity allows her to point tendencies out to you that you are not aware of yourself.

If you think you are beaten, you are;
If you think you dare not, you don't;
If you'd like to win, but think you can't;
It's almost a certainty, you won't

If you think you'll lose, you've lost.
For out in the World you'll find
Success begins in a person's will;
It's all in the State of Mind.

Think that you can and you will,
Think small and you'll fall behind;
Think that you can and you will,
It's all in the State of Mind.

Life's battles don't often go to the
Stronger or faster man,
But sooner or later the man who wins
Is the man who thinks he can.

"All people live in their own dream, in their own mind; they are in a completely different world from the one we live in."
"How much you love yourself and how you feel about yourself are directly proportionate to the quality and integrity of your world."
---- Don Miguel Ruiz, The Four Agreements ----

Self-talk and Stress

One of the major areas that life coaching helps you to become even more aware of is your self talk. Self–talk refers to the dialogue that goes on inside your head when faced with conflict or life challenges or even simple day-to-day concerns. This aspect of yourself has a running commentary about everything you do. It never lets anything go by with out some comment, remark or evaluation.  Self-talk can be positive or negative.  More often than not, it is negative, causing unnecessary stress and making life a misery.

Becoming aware of this process is the first step in taking charge of this self-sabotaging part of yourself. The automatic reactions you have to this constant barrage of negative thoughts, judgments and evaluations can keep you feeling stressed and less able to meet life’s challenges.  It can also compromise your immune system, leading to a host of minor symptoms and ultimately, if left unchecked, to serious health problems of one sort or another.

You’ll recognize these thoughts because you have heard them all your life; “I'm not smart enough, something is wrong, I can't do it, I never finish anything, this is too hard, change takes too long, etc”. You may initially have formed these negative ideas and beliefs about yourself from things you heard from a parent, teacher, family member or someone else who was in authority over you, or they may have been decisions that you made in reaction to some distressing event. Now, as an adult, you have incorporated them into your own personality. In effect you don't need those people in authority telling you what to do any more, they are living inside your own head!

These thoughts surface when you are faced with doing something that is counter to what your mind thinks you can do, or has a negative opinion about. Think back over some times when your own ideas or thoughts about what you could or could not accomplish got in the way of something you really wanted.

This internal monologue is present in everyone. The bad news is that there is no getting rid of it. The good news is that you can learn how to manage your mind so that it is your servant and you are the master, not the other way around.

What is needed first is awareness. You must become aware of the inner dialogue. Your coach will ask you to begin to notice when it shows up, what it is telling you. You will have to be vigilant to begin with. You think that voice is you. It isn't. The fact that you can discuss it means that it is something that you do, not who you are. Your coach will encourage you to begin to pay attention to what you think. Observe it without buying into what your mind is telling you. See if you can start to recognize the repetitive nature of the thoughts.

As your awareness develops, you begin to realise that you don't have to react to the thoughts your mind presents to you. It is a habit you can break with that newly acquired awareness. The moment you notice that it is just a thought and not a command you have a choice. You are in touch with your "observing self". That gap or moment of awareness allows you to notice the thought and either choose to do what you have always done, or choose to do something different.

Start with observing how often you listen to “your mind”. Remember, change takes time, effort and persistent practice.

"You have everything you need: a miraculous body, a phenomenal brain, and a vast and powerful subconscious mind. Now it's just a matter of focusing them in the right direction."
---- James Allen, As You Think ----

Stress Management

Stress is Unavoidable.  No one can live a completely stress-free life. Nor would that be desirable. "Good" stress or to put it another way, "optimum" stress, is necessary for healthy growth and development. On the other hand, ongoing, relentless, frustrating, unresolved events and, even more importantly, your responses to them, wreak havoc on your physical and emotional well-being. Since you do not have absolute control over your universe, the only thing you can truly master is how you respond to it.

On a physiological level, your reaction to stressful events, whether you judge them to be positive or negative, is basically the same. This is an aspect of the “fight or flight” response - your body preparing you for action. Your body gears up to be able to do what is required to ensure your survival. This "gearing up" is not a cause for alarm if it occurs on a temporary and infrequent basis. But, if your response keeps you in a hyper-aroused state for very long, body systems start to show wear and tear and can result in symptoms such as chronic headaches, anxiety, insomnia, depression, irritable bowel syndrome, Raynaud's Syndrome, hypertension, panic attacks, adrenal fatigue, exhaustion and a whole host of other chronic, resistant ailments.

The psychological factors related to stress can also take a toll on your emotional health. Consider, for example, the stress of getting fired from your job. Not only do you experience a physiological response to such a highly stressful event, but you may further incapacitate yourself with such self-talk as "I am worthless", “I am a failure”, "I can't do anything right", “I’ll never get such a good job again”, or "What will my friends/family think of me?" The good news is that you can learn ways of managing your responses to challenging events to minimize their negative impact.

Two Approaches to Successfully Managing Stress.  a) Learn how to recognize your body's stress response and learn how to relax.  b) Take stock of your environment and your lifestyle and make changes to counteract the ongoing stress.  Which do you think is the hardest to do?

Being able to take your body to a state of deep relaxation is the key to success. If done consistently, your body can recuperate from chronic stress. Since you are in control of your behaviour, this is usually the easiest place to start.

The problem with relaxation is that most people think they already know what it is. Unfortunately, stressed individuals have often lost the ability to recognise what a really relaxed state feels like in their body. When people under chronic stress think of relaxation, they often think of recreation, or the release created by exercise, alcohol, cigarettes or recreational drugs, rather than true physiological relaxation.

Begin with Awareness Training.  To effectively manage stress you must pay attention to the signals your body is giving you that tell you whether you are stressed or relaxed. This may sound simple, but in many people, those signals have been ignored for so long that they either a) don't know what to look for and/or b) would not even recognize the signs if they did.

Paying attention to your body’s signals is a major step in reducing stress. In our fast-paced society, people often override symptoms of stress in order to be more productive.  Over time, this causes an increase in stress levels, eventually leading to symptoms that can no longer be ignored as the “fight or flight” response is triggered:

  • Increased heart rate

  • Fast, shallow breathing/hyperventilating

  • Chest pains, tightness in the chest, and/or a feeling of suffocation/shortness of breath

  • Dry mouth

  • Feeling increasingly hot/sweating palms

  • Tight, tensed muscles

  • Feeling of panic/shock/extreme anxiety

  • Overwhelming frustration/anger

  • General numbness and/or feeling of unreality and detachment

  • Tingling hands/”pins and needles”

  • Dizziness/light-headedness/feeling faint

  • Difficulty in concentrating/shortened attention span

  • Indigestion/nausea/vomiting/diarrhoea

  • Difficulty in sleeping

To reduce the damaging effects on the body of ongoing stressors, the body needs to be allowed to relax and recharge after getting geared up for a challenge.

Practice Relaxation Techniques.  One of the best relaxation exercises is the practice of abdominal breathing. Yoga, meditation, T'ai Chi and other meditative disciplines often use abdominal respiration to promote relaxation. When you practice relaxation consistently, over time the body develops a baseline level of relaxation that provides a 'buffer' against the negative effects of stress. In other words, because you take your body to a relaxed state often, the cumulative effects of this relaxation training provide you with protection from the daily effects of stress. Regular relaxation training is useful as part of a programme of disease prevention and maintenance of a happy, healthy lifestyle.

Daily relaxation practice is different from the physical exercise you do to stay in shape. It helps you stay 'in shape' in another way, through helping you maintain optimum functioning. In order to obtain the greatest benefits from relaxation, you must be present and attuned to how your body feels. This is quite different from going to the gym and reading a book or listening to music while exercising on the cross trainer, treadmill or stationary bicycle, where your body is being worked, but your attention is somewhere else.

If you develop some skill in reducing the physical symptoms of stress and still have a nervous system that usually operates in the 'red zone', you will need to investigate how your current coping strategies and your activities contribute to the level of tension or anxiety in your body. If you feel pushed, exhausted, too busy, irritable and at your wits end much of the time, then you are probably in the 'red zone' too often. And if there are ongoing, unresolved issues in your relationships at home and at work that you feel you are just 'putting up with' but never seem to change, you are also flirting with the 'red zone'.

Another way to look at this is to use the analogy of a car. You can view the sympathetic (heightened) nervous system activity as an accelerator pedal and the parasympathetic (relaxation) nervous system activity as a brake pedal. In order to remain healthy, you have to apply the brake pedal regularly in order to bring the 'rpms' of your body engine down to normal. This is what regular breathing/relaxation practice helps you to do. By regularly resetting the nervous system back down to normal, you stay out of the red zone.

No Pain, No Gain.  Change is probably the hardest thing for human beings to do. This is especially true with conscious change, like a new exercise or diet programme, or changing how you react to things. We like familiarity; it gives us a feeling of comfort and certainty. We have the same routines in the morning, relate to our spouse or boss in the same way. And we often stay the same even when faced with the fact that our lives not working the way we would like them to. While useful alternatives like reading a book on relationships, taking a class or seeing a counsellor are available, we say “no”, preferring the familiar simply because change is uncomfortable. Sustained effort is required in order to achieve results, and this is where the support of a coach can make all the difference.

ARE YOU READY FOR LIFE COACHING?

So often in life, there is a tremendous discrepancy between what we say we want and what (if anything) we demonstrate our commitment to having.  When these two things are aligned, the world is our oyster, and we experience life as a continual unfolding of positive challenges and pleasant rewards.  When they are out of sync, we experience struggle, helplessness, depression and despair.  Why is committing to what we really want to have in our life so important?  In the words of Scottish historian and adventurer W H Murray:  “Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness.  Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation) there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans:  that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too.  All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred.  A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favour all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way."

Each of us has all the resources and strength we need deep within us to live empowered and fulfilled lives - sometimes we just need a little help in accessing them and using them to our full advantage.  Ask yourself what you would do differently if you knew you couldn't fail, and what you need to get you to act on that conviction.  A life coach will help you achieve it.  To find out if you are ready for life coaching, you might like to have a look at the coachability index below.

LIFE COACHING EXERCISES

"Start by doing is what is necessary, then what is possible
and suddenly you are doing the impossible."

                                                                                                   St. Francis of Assisi

Exploring the way ahead

What would you do differently, right now, with confidence and a strong sense of purpose, if you knew you could not fail?

You may already have a strong sense of purpose and a clear, confident idea of what you want out of life, the changes you would like to make, and the support you need from your life coach to help you to achieve your goals.  On the other hand, you may feel vaguely dissatisfied, restless, unhappy or stuck, without knowing precisely what the problem is or what you can do to resolve it.  The following exercises will help you clarify your thinking, increase your self awareness and open up new possibilities you may not have previously considered.

Questions for Personal Reflection

Some important questions to ask yourself, which will help you to clarify your direction, set meaningful goals and create the life you want, might be:

  •  What are you truly passionate about? What brings you alive and makes time fly?

  •  What are your own particular gifts and talents, and are you making the most of them?

  •  What do you really want out of life? What would your ideal life look like?

  •  What are you currently doing to make sure you get it?

  •  Are you aware of how to tap into your rich inner strength and resourcefulness?

  •  How could you improve your family/home life/work life?

  •  What would need to change? What help would you need?

  •  Is the life you are living one of your choosing? If not, why not?

  •  Do you feel financially secure?  How much money would you like to earn/save?

  •  What motivates you? Are you working in a job/career that you love?

  •  What would be your ideal job? Where? What hours would you ideally like to work?

  •  What are your personal/career expectations and what are you doing to further them?

  •  What is currently missing in your life? What would make it more fulfilling?

  •  What do you do to avoid facing your feelings? (Alcohol, food, work, etc?)

  •  Is your social life as satisfying as you would like it to be?

  •  How would you like to improve it?

  •  Are you making the best of yourself and your relationships at home/at work?

  •  When things go wrong, do you think about what you could have done differently?

  •  How do you sabotage your best intentions? Why?

  •  What would you like to change/develop about yourself?

  •  How well do you look after yourself - physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually?

  •  What changes could you make to improve how you feel?

  •  How/where do you see yourself in three months/six months/one year/two years/five years’ time?

  •  What difference would working with a coach make, and what would you want from him/her?

  •  Are you willing to commit funds to coaching over a period of time to achieve your goals?

Life Balance

Wheel of Life exercise

Having a sense of balance in your life is essential for your health, happiness and ultimate success. The twelve sections in the Wheel of Life below offer an idea of the balance you might like to aim for.

Regarding the centre of the wheel as 0 and the outer edge as 10, plot your level of satisfaction with each area of your life along each of the straight lines, and then join up all the dots to form what will look like a spider's web. The end result will show you how balanced your life currently is and which areas could possibly do with greater attention, depending on your own particular circumstances.

This is the starting point for realigning your priorities and setting goals for those areas where you want to grow. Identify two or three scores that you want to impact immediately. What actions will you take? When will you take these actions? What support do you require to ensure that the actions occur?  How will these goals support your longer term vision of what you want out of life?

To do this you may need to let go of old habits, attitudes and ways of working, but you will be amazed at how creative you can be when you feel supported and motivated, and this is where a life coach with your best interests at heart can make all the difference.

Coaching Starter Assignment I

Are you ready to take the first step towards creating the life you really want?  This exercise will help you to become more aware of yourself, your strengths and talents, and what you would like to change.

  1. Make a list of what you really want from life. Life coaching works best when you have clear goals based on your needs and values. If you're unsure what your goals and/or needs are, we can discuss them more fully in due course. In the meantime, what might they be? Don't be put off if they seem too silly, too difficult, too unlikely. Play with the challenge, have fun, use your imagination!
  2. Write a personal biography, as long or as short as you want, but try to include the following:

  3. -   Your passion in life. What makes you happiest/most fulfilled?
    -   What is your purpose in life?
    -   What do you want for yourself and others close to you?
    -   What are the most significant experiences/events in your life?
    -   What minor/major disappointments have you experienced in your life?
    -   What are your achievements? (List at least 20!)
    -   Your business 'mission' - what do you want professionally?
    -   Why do you do what you do? What do you give that is unique or exciting to you?
    -   What do you want to leave for others - your legacy?
    -   What are your personal and professional strengths?
    -   What are you most pleased and proud of having accomplished?
    -   What particular gifts/talents do you have? What makes them unique?
    -   Anything else you want to include about yourself.
  4. Now spend some time thinking about yourself, as if you are meeting yourself for the first time. This will help you to become aware of the first impression you make on others. Make notes, if you wish.

  5. -   What do you notice about yourself?
    -   What do you notice about your appearance?
    -   What do you sound like?
    -   How do you come across to others?
    -   How do you interact with others?
    -   Are you relaxed/anxious, happy/sad, open/defensive, enthusiastic/bored, lively/quiet …?
    -   Do you behave the same or do you change in different circumstances/environments?
    -   What makes you feel uncomfortable?
    -   What else do you notice?
    -   What is your overall impression of yourself?

  6. Make a list of things which you are putting up with/tolerating in your life, from a 'minor' irritation like a button missing from a favourite jacket that you've intended to get fixed for ages, to 'major' tolerations like allowing others to treat you in a way that is seriously out of line with your own beliefs and values, doing a job that does not fulfil you or remaining in a restricting or damaging relationship.
  7. Make a list of 10 things you are now willing to do or to change.
  8. How can I best coach you? What do you want/expect from me?

Coaching Starter Assignment II

Below are a list of questions I shall ask you to look at if you engage me as your coach, if they are relevant to your particular circumstances. Some overlap with material you may have already covered, some don't. For your own benefit, please answer them as truthfully as you can. They are designed to increase your self-awareness, enhance your commitment to the coaching process and provide us both with valuable information about you, as long as you are happy to share it with me.

  • Where do you get your energy and motivation from? (Both positive and negative sources)

  • Where/when are you most irresponsible?

  • What particular gift/talent do you have that you would love the chance to build your life around?

  • Why have you engaged me?

  • How comfortable are you about being accountable to me for your own progress?

  • What five changes can you make in a week to get off to a good start in our coaching?

  • How might you undermine our coaching/professional relationship?

  • How willing are you to make substantial changes?

  • How will you know how effective our coaching has been?

  • What do you need from me to get the most out of our coaching relationship?

  • What consumes your time that is not creating a wonderful present or a wonderful future?

  • Are you open to doing things the easy way/accepting that life does not have to be a struggle?

  • Are you someone who expects things to go wrong or is confident that things will work out well?

  • What are you most 'addicted' to (both tangible and intangible)? Are you willing to overcome them?

  • Is there something major/fundamental that you need to resolve? Coaching looks forwards, not at the past.  Would you benefit from counselling or therapy to support your coaching?

  • What is your life-long dream/ambition?

  • How strong is your 'personal foundation' - how strong a base do you have? (Do you get your personal needs met consistently; do you live according to your own values, beliefs and standards; is your personal/professional/family community strong, supportive and emotionally nourishing?)

  • What is lacking in your life that would make a significant difference to your energy, drive and creativity?

  • What percentage of the life you are leading did you choose/is actually the life you want to live?

  • What five business/professional opportunities are you currently not making the most/anything of?

  • How much profit should you/your business/your department be making? (Use a different measure of success if it is more appropriate to your work or situation.)

Planning Ahead and Setting goals

"If you don't set goals for yourself, you are doomed to work to achieve the goals of someone else."

About Goal Setting
Goal-Setting Guidelines
SMART Goals
Planning Ahead
Final Action Plan

This section has been designed to help you identify your short, medium and longer term goals so that you can be clear about the outcome you would like from coaching and align your goals with your long term vision.

About Goal Setting

Two metaphysical principles of life to bear in mind when deciding to make any kind of changes in your life are that:

  • Whatever you focus on grows.

  • Whatever you resist persists.

You have far more power and influence over what happens to you than you may realise. Action follows on from thought, and expectation yields results, for good or bad. Your thoughts influence your emotions, which in turn affect your behaviour, whether you are conscious of the process or not.  Positive thoughts tend to produce a positive outcome, and conversely, negative thoughts tend to produce a negative outcome.  If this is a new concept for you, test it out.  Notice how many things often go wrong during the day if you get out of bed the wrong side, or how tense or non-productive a conversation can be if you anticipate that it will be difficult.

The key to strong motivation and lasting success is to identify a compelling goal that focuses your attention on moving towards what you really want, rather than on moving away from what you do not want.  An example of this might be to find a job that makes your heart sing rather than one that will simply protect you from redundancy.

A goal also needs to be ecological to succeed in the long term:

  • What will it give you?

  • What effect will it have on your life and work, your health, happiness, family, friends, colleagues?

  • Does your energy increase when you think about it?

  • Is it truly in your own best interests?

Goal-setting Guidelines

If you have not already done so, fill in the Wheel of Life for a broad awareness of what is currently happening for you, where you are satisfied and where you want to make changes.

When setting goals, bear in mind the importance of including supportive self-care goals that will give your efforts the best chance of success. Reflect on what you might need to do to:

  • establish nourishing habits that boost your energy
  • reduce things you are tolerating that drain you.

Make your goals SMART ones:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Realistic
  • Time deadline

Choose goals that inspire you, feel within reach and increase your choices for the future, as these will stimulate you the most to take action.  Ambitious goals can be more easily achieved in bite-sized chunks.

Planning ahead

Whilst even the most carefully laid plans can go awry, the best way to live with a sense of purpose, find happiness and fulfil your potential is to have a long term vision of what you would most like to achieve in each area of your life and what steps you can take along the way to make that vision a reality.  Then work in 3 year time spans, breaking larger goals down into more readily achievable 3 month and 1 year goals.

  • Three Year Vision

How do you want your life to be in 3 years? Look at the different areas of your life. Take some time to reflect on the bigger picture and to express what you really care about and want rather than what you should do.

  • One Year Goals

Make a list of 3-6 goals for the next year which support you in moving towards your 3 year vision. These can be doing, learning or being goals. Choose 3 of these to be your primary goals for the year.

  • Three Month Goals

Make a list of 3-6 goals for the next three months which support you in moving towards each of your primary one year goals. Choose 3 of these to be your initial focus for our work together and pick goals you really want and not those you think you ought or might want. If you have goals which you have historically chosen, but have not achieved, then leave these until later unless you feel really motivated and ready to move forward with them now.

Final Action Plan

For each of the initial short term goals you have chosen to work on, make a list of actions which you think will be required to achieve them.

LIFE COACHING FEE OPTIONS

Life coaching can take place either face to face, on the telephone, or a combination of both, depending on what suits you best.  Telephone sessions are often preferable for clients who live in more isolated areas, who have dependants at home, or who would otherwise have a time-consuming journey across town in heavy traffic in order to meet with their life coach.

How much progress you make and how quickly you achieve the results you are looking for will depend not only on how often you meet with your coach but also on how much committed action you take in between each coaching session on mutually agreed goals.

You can combine the following options to tailor a life coaching package that suits your requirements.  For example, if you think it would be difficult to fit in regular weekly sessions, but have a lot you would like to get through with your coach, you may find that a longer session a couple of times a month, either face to face or on the phone, would work better for you.  Or you may choose to combine shorter telephone coaching sessions with a longer face to face session once or twice a month.  You may also opt for one or two longer coaching sessions to allow you more time to discuss a specific issue in greater depth that is challenging you.  It is entirely up to you.

Length of session Cost per session

1 x 45 minutes

1 x 60 minutes

1 x 75 minutes

1 x 90 minutes

£45

£60

£75

£90

Cancellation Policy:  Please note that 24 hours' notice is required of any change of appointment or the session will be charged for in full.

Life coaching is very effective over the telephone, and the coach and client need never actually meet in person.  However, many people prefer a greater or lesser degree of face to face contact, if this is possible.  If you live in Edinburgh, I am also happy to come to you, either at your home or at your place of work, for a negotiated fee that takes into account my travelling time and expenses.

If you have a significant change you would like to make in your personal or professional life, I would strongly recommend weekly life coaching sessions, at least initially, to stimulate your motivation and develop a strong and steady momentum.  This can then be reviewed after a few weeks if necessary, once you feel you are making good progress. A greater initial commitment tends to alter behaviour more quickly and so reap greater rewards in the long run.

What is life coaching?

Coaching is a confidential and dynamic interaction with someone trained to understand you and your needs and inspire you to take whatever action is needed to get the results you really want in your personal or professional life.  Through thought-provoking and stimulating conversations, the coaching process helps you to change, grow and develop your potential more quickly and easily than you might otherwise do on your own.  It enables you to become more effective by encouraging you to identify and eliminate things that drain you and build up whatever brings out the best in you.  Coaching should not be confused with therapy or counselling, as it's purpose is to focus your attention on taking action rather than on examining and understanding the past.  It can address specific personal projects, professional or business success, or general conditions of your life you would like to change.

Your relationship with your coach is unique.  Your coach is your champion, with no personal agenda other than your ongoing progress and ultimate success.  She has complete confidence in your ability to achieve what you want with the right focus, support and encouragement, and will make sure that you have it, holding you accountable for the changes you commit to making.  You can be as honest as you like with your coach, without fear of being judged or criticised, as she is on your side, calm, clear and objective.   Her focus is on what is best for you, and she understands the challenge of change.  She supports you in achieving your goals through clarifying questions, provocative conversations and empowering requests.

As human beings, we are psychologically programmed to resist change – it is a built-in survival tool. If things change too rapidly, it puts us and those around us under severe stress. This unconscious resistance can sabotage our best intentions, which is where the help of a dedicated coach can make all the difference.
